High School is technically free on the island of Tablas, but practically costs money in the form of school book, pencils, project fees, "compulsory donations", and transport These costs add up and deny many children on the island the chance of secondary education.

Jelian is a RYE School english student currently at level 3.
Jelian has six brothers and sisters, and lives with her mother and father, her four of her siblings and her baby niece. Her oldest sibling in 21 years old and the youngest is 7 years old. Jelian's family has crops in the mountain including corn and bundo (a root crop) for eating and selling. On a normal day Jelian will have boiled root crop for breakfast and diner and rice for lunch.
The majority of Jelian's commute to school is about a 20 minute walk along a tiny path for 20 minutes. As the path is mud and rocks on rainy days it can very slippery on her walk to school. Her parents encourage her with her studies and Jelian is keen to go to school as much as possible and so her walk to school can be dangerous some days.
Her parents hope that Jelian will be able to finish her studies so that she will be able to help the family and make a better life for herself.
